Questions answered on newborn photography | by Heart & Soul Photography

Sandton Newborn PhotographerAnswers to questions regarding a newborn photo session

Since the birth of my son, I have fallen in love with newborn photography. There is something so special about a little baby that is only a few hours or days old. This time is so incredibly fleeting and there is such a limited time that you can only count your child’s age in days!

When do I book the newborn shoot?

Some of the newborn poses are only possible in the first few weeks; up to 15 days, maybe 20 days at a push. The first 10 days are really ideal. Many moms are not aware of the fact that you need to book your newborn shoot during this very early period, meaning you want to book the shoot while you are still pregnant.

Babies spend most of their time sleeping during these early days and they are easily posed into positions similar to how they were positioned when in the womb. After two weeks they get more alert, stronger, easily stimulated and very interested in their surroundings, especially if something is happening that is outside of their routine.

Will the newborn shoot take place at home or in studio?

From my own experience when my son was born, I was horrified at the thought of leaving the house in the first two weeks! Many moms tend to spend the first month or so at home with limited visitors, never mind the fact that moms can’t drive for the first 4 – 6 weeks after a C-section.

I found the thought incredibly daunting, not knowing what to take with me, the thought of leaving something important behind, whether there is be a place to breastfeed, change nappies etc. It was for this reason that I decided to offer new born photo shoots at your home, so you are in your comfort zone, with everything around that you might need for any given circumstance. If your preference is to come to the studio, this can also be arranged, but I find that most parents would prefer to stay at home for the duration of the session.

How long is a newborn shoot?

The new born package is for 2-3 hours. The time your shoot will take is actually really up to baby. If the baby is a good sleeper, the shoot can easily be done in around 2 hours. If baby is older or a little niggly, we spend a lot of the time feeding, soothing, rocking, changing and well… pretty much doing whatever it is that baby needs at the time.

Are mom and dad able to join the photo shoot?

Yes. I usually split the photo session up into two sections: A few posed shots and then also a family session. Everyone is welcome, granny and grandpa too if they happen to be present, siblings and of course cats and dogs if they are part of your family!

What do I need to do to prepare for my photo shoot?

Once you have booked your session with me, I send you a detailed document with preparation notes for the photo shoot.

My baby is older, can I still book a photo shoot or is it too late?

My new born package is really up to around the age of 3 weeks, but this does not mean you can’t book a photo shoot if you missed this period and baby is older. There are many reasons and circumstances that can cause you to miss this period, even if you were planning it way in advance.

Babies are sometimes born premature; they can suffer from jaundice etc. This may mean they will be in hospital a little longer than planned, but this doesn’t mean you have to cancel your photo session. It just means we change things up a little. If baby is older (in other words between 3 weeks and 2 months) – we do a more natural style of photos: snuggling with mommy, daddy & siblings, hands and feet, as well as awake photos with baby on the bed etc. We do usually get a few posed photos in as well.

Newborn Photography

I really love seeing the little ones grow up. These days I often get booked for a new born session where the once day old baby is now the older sibling, holding their little brother or sister in their arms.

Personal Branding Photography session with Tatjana – Johannesburg Personal Branding Photographer

I recently did a personal branding photography session with Tatjana from Peak Meditation in Hartbeespoort, where Tatjana runs her practice from. We had a wonderful shoot, starting at the stunning  Leopard Lodge with some relaxed lifestyle portraits, and of course a few meditation posed shots, the view from Leopard Lodge is really stunning. We then did the second part our shoot at  Die Ou Pastorie, just down the road, where we concentrated on a more  formal, business look for Tatjana. I loved spending the day with Tatjana, she is such a lovely person, loved her energy.

Have a look at Tatjana’s meditation blog, there’s loads of information on the different coaching, and facilitation that Tatajana offers, especially Facilitated Contemplation.  I recently did a one on one session with Tatjana, and it was truly wonderful.

Contemplation is “asking and it will be given.” You ask a question and the answer will be given to you not in form of thinking but as a direct experience. Contemplation leads you into the reality of a moment. The reality always leads to love and compassion.

Old Hollywood Pin-Up Shoot with Bettie Flash- Johannesburg Pin-Up Photographer

I recently did an Old Hollywood Pin-Up shoot under my new brand, Bettie Bombshell Photography, with the glamorous Bettie Flash. Besides being a Pin-Up model, Bettie Flash is also a keen blogger and fitness mom, so naturally she blogged about her shoot with me, read all about it here;

Joburg Pin-Up photographer

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to shoot with Bronwyn Stewart from Bettie Bombshell Photography. We went out to French Toast in Harties for the shoot because of the quaint little Paris themed set, complete with Pont des Arts and Eiffel Tower. If that isn’t exciting enough, wait until you hear the best part – my wardrobe is older than I am.

Since going platinum blonde, I’ve been called Marilyn Monroe an awful lot. So it was kind of fitting that I channeled the blonde bombshell when I got in front of the camera again for the first time in a year. A lot has happened over the space of this year and I think that I’ve finally discovered who I am. Since turning 30, things have really started to pick up for this Bettie. I’ve been strict with my training and diet, so I’ve started to drop weight again, which is the goal! The weight loss and overall confidence kick in the squat butt inspired me to try on a dress that I have treasured since I was 17 years old. As an avid collector of vintage evening dresses, this one in particular was the dress that started it all.

Made for my grandmother using her measurements, this 1950’s original is a skin-tight, LBD that would have knocked the socks off of my grandfather when he saw her in it. It was an unreal honour to be able to wear this dress for my shoot with Bron. Seeing as how this little number isn’t exactly a spring chicken and is pushing 60. The fact that it is still in such amazing condition is just a testament to how carefully I take care of my clothing. Yes, that was a shameless brag.

The only hiccup is that two teeth from the zip have fallen off, but that can easily be replaced once I find someone who I trust enough to handle the dress for me. It must be pointed out that while the bust and hip of this dress fits like it was made for me, my waist is much smaller than my Gran’s was, so there is a bit of ruffling around that area. Still, I have my Gran’s great rack and knockout curves, so who cares about a little ruffle?

Bronwyn, as always, was a total dream to shoot with and I was absolutely floored with the shots that we managed to get in just 20 minutes. Oh, yes… we only had 20 minutes to shoot and numerous challenges of curious tourists and visitors wanting in on the action. I mean you can’t really blame their curiosity, it isn’t every day that you stumble across a Marilyn-esque pin-up girl in Hartebeespoort dam. Eventually we roped in my Paul to hold up a light reflector to help capture this dreamy glow that Bron managed to create for me.

I got to have a taste of French Noir glam and felt like a million bucks doing it. Plus, I’ve debunked the old Blondes have more fun” saying, it is totally true.

Lady T’s whimsical Boudoir Shoot | Johannesburg Boudoir Photographer

This is beautiful Lady T, she is in her 40’s, a mother and has been married for 10 years. She wanted to give her husband an unforgettable gift, something very special for their 10th wedding anniversary, so she decided to do a boudoir shoot.

South Africa Boudoir Photographer

It was something she has always wanted to do, not just purely as a gift for her hubby, but also for herself. She was a little nervous and shy in the beginning, as is the case with most ladies, when doing a boudoir shoot, but she was also very excited, and very quickly found her groove. Lady T absolutely loved the experience and was over the moon with her gorgeous photos, which she presented to hubby in a hand stitched leather album.  Hubby loved his gift, naturally.

Dainfern Newborn Photographer| Lwange’s Newborn Photo Session

Dainfern Newborn Photographer

Sweet little Lwange was incredibly well behaved, even though she was almost out of the ‘newborn’ phase, she was such a perfect poser. She slept like an angel and posed like a cherub while I talked about travel around Africa with her father, who shares my passion for travel in and around Africa. What a perfect way to spend an afternoon! I can’t complain. 🙂

I was particularly happy to meet little Oliver. This little guy had a bit of a rough start and we ended up having to postpone this newborn photo session a few times before he was ready for the big event! But Oliver proved he really wanted to play along with big brother Logan who is a real brother bear and completely in love!

1950’s Inspired Family Shoot|Johannesburg Family Photographer

I had such an amazing family photo shoot at Pretville in Hartbeespoort, with the awesome Sawyer family, as you can clearly see. Shannon went all out with the styling, and had loads fun with the theme, which was a mix of 1940’s and 50’s vintage style

I absolutely loved spending my day with the lovely twins, Rhys & Teeghan, their stunning mom, Shannon, and their beautiful Nanna, Pam. These two kept me on my toes, but I loved their energy. This one goes done in the books as one of my most favourite family photo shoots, by far!
