Misty Sunday Morning – Potrait Session with Cashe

Johannesburg Portrait photographer

A blog post written from my clients view:

The ultimate lazy Sunday is one where it is overcast with a light drizzle thrown in for good measure. I thought that my Sunday was going to be one filled with the crinkling of chip packets and enough DVD’s to mush a mind, fortunately for me (and my waist line); Bronwyn had other ideas.

Accompanying the hazy weather was a hauntingly dreamy mist that can only be described as inviting for any photographer, it doesn’t happen often where Mother Nature provides your effects for you, especially in the last dregs of a Hiveld winter.

I was given the brief to do my makeup and bring all of my hair accessories and a few outfit changes and get myself to the hills of Constantia Kloof where the mist was at its thickest for an impromptu photoshoot. I was thrilled, I always have the most fun when I shoot with Bronwyn and the end result is always breath-taking.

After a few accessory changes and a couple of test shots in the drizzle, we had the perfect hair for a dreamy, mist filled shoot; but the drizzle turned into a legitimate shower and we had to wait around for a little while. Keeping tabs on the weather and on the time, we had to make sure that there would still be enough light to capture what Bron was trying to get.  Thankfully she was able to.

When the rain let up a little, we set to work trying to capture the mystery of the Misty afternoon as well as myself trying to get a dreamy facial expression.  I think that because I was waiting around for a bit, I became so comfortable that my face wouldn’t do what my brain (and Bron) was asking it to. Thankfully though, it did eventually start playing along and we managed to get a few incredible shots!

As usual, Bron was extremely patient with me and my uncooperative face and helped me feel what she was wanting to capture; even though we were shooting in the rain for the most part.  Although Bron periodically ran inside to dry off her camera, she was back and determined to get the perfect shot within seconds.

I am always concerned that I am not able to give the photographer what they are looking for, but Bron has this amazing way of taking what you give her and turning it into art.  The photos that she managed to get are amazing, she managed to use the mist and soft light to create dreamy images that were laced with mystery and a bit of wonder.  What Bronwyn is able to do with a sleepy model, some mist and a light drizzle is incredible.  Even though the entire shoot was brief, the photos blew my mind and I although I knew that Bron would be able to create magic with her camera, how she continues to exceed expectations, every time is something worth paying attention to!

Prashini & Her Lovely Family – Fourways Family Photographer

Prashini contacted me a while ago to do a family shoot. I had photographed two of her very good friends, Nevash & Geshree, kids birthdays parties, and after seeing the photos, Prashini decided she wanted to do a family photo session with me.

It took a while to pull it all together, with all the postponements due to many factors, but after 3 months, we manged to get it together.

I really loved spending time with The Pena family, it was such a chilled session, naturally captured and full of love.

To the Pena family, Enjoy your time in Dubai over December, and travel safe.

Happy Holidays

Much Love,

Bronwyn

Kiaran’s 1st Birthday Party – Fourways Kids Party Photographer

Kiaran’s first birthday party was a train themed party and was held at Post House Parties in Chartwell. Mom, Geshree went all out and decorated the venue beautifully, Kiarn’s train cake was really awesome,  and was a rainbow sponge cake, oh so colourful.

It was such a wonderful day shared with very special family and close friends, and filled with  so much love and adoration.  What a truly lucky boy, Kiaran is to have such wonderful people (friends and family)  in his life, that I’m sure will be there every step of the way, to guide him and support him as he grows up, they say it takes a village to bring up a child, well Kiaran has his wonderfuyl people.

The FH Woman’s Day, Pin-Up Bazaar – Johannesburg Pin-Up Photographer

Fallen Hero’s hosted a wonderful, ladies only, event to celebrate Women’s Day, a national holiday in South Africa. Here’s a little history about Women’s day; On 9 August 1956, more than 50,000 women staged a march on the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the proposed amendments to the Urban Areas Act (commonly known as the pass laws) of 1950. They left bundles of petitions containing more than 100 000 signatures at prime minister J.G. Strijdom’s office doors. Outside they stood silently for 30 minutes, many with their children on their backs. The women sang a protest song that was composed in honour of the occasion: Wathint’Abafazi Wathint’imbokodo!(Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock.). In the 54 years since, the phrase (or its latest incarnation: “you strike a woman, you strike a rock“) has come to represent women’s courage and strength in South Africa.

The Women’s Day Pin-Up Bazaar  was a really awesome event  and was held at Fallen Heroes Tattoo studio in Parkhurst. The attendance was amazing, and all the ladies went out of their way to dress up proper Pin-Up style, they all looked gorgeous. Heart & Soul Photography, which will be launching Bella Dea Boudoir & Pin-Up photography brand very soon, was there with a themed photo booth set-up, complete with a funky rockabilly, African styled backdrop and loads of props. The ladies really had a ball playing dress up and practicing their best Pin-Up poses, which were picture perfect.  It was a really fantastic event and well done to The Fallen Hero’s team for putting it all together, until next year, keep rocking ladies.

A Vintage Affair – Mpho & Jeffrey’s Maternity Session – Fourways Maternity Photographer

My Wonderful clients… made this a really fun, playful and fantastic session, I loved this  maternity shoot so much, Mpho was really glowing, and it shows.

Mpho and Jeffrey, what more can I say, they actually, kinda directed their maternity session by themselves, with very little help from me, love when that happens. Just beautiful.

I’m so looking forward to meeting their little girl, watch this space, to see the little gorgeousness.

Mihle & Zolani’s – Jozi City Maternity Shoot

My clients are awesome,  really they are, and Mihle and Zols are no exception. They were so chilled and so much fun to shoot. They followed direction perfectly and we had loads of laughs. This was one of my favourite maternity shoots for many reasons.

We started our session off in Braamfontein and then moved to Newtown and finished off on The Nelson Mandela Bridge at sunset. I love this city, Jozi is magical, it truly is, I have said this before, but I really need to spend more time in the city, so that’s exactly what I will be doing.

Mihle & Zols are expecting their little lady very soon, she should be arriving the beginning of October, but I have a feeling it may be sooner. I wish them lots of love and light, cuddles and laughter.

Pretty Undead Shoot – Johannesburg Pin-Up Photographer

In Bettie Flash’s own words:

It seems like every few months a new craze emerges, first Vampires were the hot topic and now Zombies have taken centre stage.  I like being a little unusual and decided on a whim that I wanted to incorporate the undead and Pin Up to create a Pretty Undead Pin Up Shoot; fortunately I have an amazing photographer who was willing to be a part of my macabre idea!

With quite literally a day’s notice, Bronwyn from Bella Dea was on call help me achieve my latest must have photoshoot.  Looking for a suitable venue in the middle of winter with little time to plan to boot made it a challenging task to say the least, but we did it!  We shot the photo’s at West Park Cemetery in Johannesburg, searching for the older sections of the cemetery and chasing the sun to get a natural glow (and this is something that a photographer would know more about).

With make shift blood to add the gore and cleverly applied make up, we were off!  I think that I managed to pull off what I would consider a freshly turned walker, possibly searching for her lost love – or a living being to eat – and thankfully I had the ever valued guidance of Bron’s eye to pose me.

There is something quite surreal about being in a quiet cemetery in the late afternoon, you can hear the hum of rush hour traffic in the distance but you’re surprisingly at peace.  Even though we spent the latter part of the shoot chasing the sun, we still managed to get some amazing shots! I didn’t even know that it was possible to make a zombie look as good as Bron did!

So again, I have to say a big thank you to Bronwyn for putting up with my bizarre requests and being so willing to jump in to help them come to life.  It was something to cross off of the ol’ Bucket List, but that doesn’t stop my mind from working overtime to come up with a new, wild photoshoot concept that I will definitely ask Bron to help with.

Sister, Sister By Rachel Zadok – South African Author

I don’t usually blog about things not photography related, but I need to tell you about this brilliant author that I know and admire, Rachel Zadok.

That day I walked into Exclusive Books during my lunch break, whilst working at The Barnyard Theatre, long before I plucked up the courage to pursue my passion and to create  a career for myself  in photography, I noticed from the corner of my eye, a book, titled Gem Squash Tokoloshe by Rachel Zadok. I doubled back, picked up the book, in hope it was the same Rachel Zadok that I knew and adored, and low and behold it was.

I can’t tell you how excited and so very proud I was. In a way, for me, I was reconnecting with Rachel again, through her beautiful story (you must understand this was before the time of Facebook and Twitter, where finding old friends was not very easy at all, and definitely not done by merely  pushing a button)  I read the back page blurb, and just knew this was a story I wanted to read.

I bought my copy of GST right there and then, and forgot what I was actually looking for in the first place, besides I had no more money to spend, but… I had me a copy of  GST, exactly what I was looking for, it turns out.  It resonated with me, having had a mother who suffered, for most of my childhood, with severe depression, even to the point of being hospitalised a few times, and mostly leaving me to my own devices. My mom too, passed away, most probably from a broken heart, having not being able to deal with my brother’s death. She never spoke much or expressed how she felt.

I loved Gem Squash Tokoloshe, because somehow it felt a bit like my story, and came into my life at the perfect time, just as I started re-evaluating my behaviour and how I perceived my life, especially with regards to my mom and my ‘lost childhood’. Gem Squash Tokoloshe had a huge impact on me.

Then came Rachel’s second novel, Sister, Sister, Damn! I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it, and waited very patiently for it to be released. It is, I have to say, one of my most favourite novels of all time, up there with Memoirs of a Geisha, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Night Circus and American Gods. I loved every single second I spent reading it. I climbed into to the story completely, from the first page. The narrative is poetic, the landscape is dark, but easily imagined, the characters complex, but easily recognised, and I felt a special connection to Sindi, her struggle to communicate and express herself, is something, I too, have battled with over the years.

I am no wordsmith, so I struggle to convey what I feel, yes, even in the written form.  I have no fancy words or literary comments to offer you about Sister, Sister, but I can tell you this… I love reading, I love literature, I always have, and I LOVE Sister, Sister, It’s beautifully written and simply sublime. It’s a novel, that deserves to be read, and I’m pretty damn sure, will be thoroughly enjoyed and even adored.

You can pick up a copy of  Sister, Sister from Exclusive Books and most good bookstores around the country, and from www.loot.co.za

The Lovely Trio Pin-Up Shoot | Miss Oh, Bronwyn & Cashe | Johannesburg PinUp Photographer

I recently had the absolute pleasure of photographing three very gorgeous woman, Pin-Up style,  in a most stunning lingerie boutique situated on 44 Stanley in Johannesburg, South Africa.  It was a day of stunning bodies, all different shapes and just celebrating their beauty as women. These are my favourite type of shoots, for many reasons.

I asked Cashe ( Bettie Flash) to write a little insert  from her point of view, on what this Pin-Up photo shoot meant to her, what follows are her words:

Who said three’s a crowd?

I often Google pictures of the gorgeous Pin-Up and burlesque ladies from way back when, and more often than not there are very few where the gorgeous ladies are together.

So when I was asked to participate in a trio pin up shoot, I jumped (very gracefully naturally) at the chance.  It was a lot easier to agree to a trio shoot when the fabulous burlesque performer; Oh Miss Oh wanted in on the action as well.  As always; the incredible Bronwyn Stewart was on hand to work her photographic magic on three very different ladies crammed into one awesome lingerie shop in Milpark.

The setting was perfect, we were using Mechant & Gentil as a location, and there is really something about being surrounded by stunning lingerie that brings out the sensual goddess within, hair and make-up done by a professional also helps!

When you are being photographed with two other gorgeous women; two women you haven’t actually met in person before; there is a certain nervousness that takes over that you cannot let show on the photos.  Fortunately Bronwyn Stewart is a master at helping her models feel at ease, it is very easy to feel so comfortable wearing very little when Bronwyn is behind a camera; she has a way with words, poses and energy that allows a girl with curves to feel like the sexiest creature in the room.  And there were three of us.

With myself, Miss Oh and Bronwyn Ruth Williams made up and ready for our shoot, it was surely a challenge to get all of us positioned and posed beautifully, while taking into consideration that each of us have very different body types and personalities.  Bronwyn S just has a way of bringing our personalities out without much effort either; all while having the artistic vision to capture some incredible shots of the three of us!

I absolutely adore the Pin-Up pictures of the three of us; the edgy and beautiful way that they were captured shows a group of ladies who have known each other for years; even though it was only for a few hours.

Bronwyn S allowed us to bring our ideas to the table and worked with what we had envisioned for the shoot in ways that neither of us could have imagined.  It made me wonder that if three almost strangers could produce photos of this nature, I could only imagine what a group of friends could produce.

I am no professional model; I am definitely not a skinny girl and I am not the type of girl who will flaunt my mom curves, thanks to Bronwyn S though; I am very proud of my body and of any beautiful woman who is willing to flaunt her best side.  I have said it before and will say it again, I would definitely recommend a pin up shoot with Bronwyn Stewart – she is a lady who nails pin up poses to help you get into them; she knows exactly how to direct you into the most flattering positions and is more patient with her clients than most people I know.

So I would like to thank Bronwyn once again for helping me realize that I am more than just a mom; more than just a girlfriend or just an employee –  I am a woman and a pretty sassy one at that and without Bronwyn I wouldn’t have seen that at all!
